1987 Dinner with Ari  My story about Ari, It was just after I graduated college and I had did a portrait for Nick of Nicks Fish market.  This was a very expensive resturant in 1987 right down town. Where an average meal in that era might be $400 to 500. So I was 28 and did a corporate head shot of Nick and was paid in a meal for up to 4 people.  I invited Ari and my girlfriend at the time  I will call her Betsy     So we just sat down Ari and Betsy are both sitting in the restaurant waiting for menus and I started to notice an odd silence or weirdness in them both. Like something was wrong in the air.  And it was like pulling teeth to get the conversation going .  I thought what the heck is with them. Ari is the most bostrous person I had ever known. Why aren’t they talking? So it took ages before they started talking but there was some very muted talking.  We ordered appetizers and were prepared to eat like kings.  The appetizers ...

As a Chicago architectural photographer I often travel to Union Pier, Michigan or Miami, Florida to shoot interior photos  for properties and developments.   The building is designed by Chicago-based, award-winning architect JOSH HUTCHISON AIA, of   34-ten Architecture   renowned for their design and technical expertise. We were asked to photograph the  modernized Springfield Beach House   in Union pier Michigan.    W e drove up there in about an hour bringing   a drone, cameras and all sorts of lighting .   We stayed overnight in the house.   We photographed interiors of the house during the day with lighting. When it became dusk we shot drone and   architectural shots of the front and back .  After dinner we started a   fire in the back and looked up at the stars.   Its one block away from an absolutely fantastic beach Berrien Public Beach  .  How my dad got his middle name.  He was in the army/airforce in World War II.  It turns out they needed men under the height of 5'7" to operate the rear machine gun in the (I believe the B17 bomber).  It was a small round pod at the very back of the plane.  That was about the worst place to be in a bomber in war since in the back of the plane it was the first most visible target for enemy fighters. It was the first to draw fire from enemy guns. And you did not live long as that rear gunner.   So you might do anything NOT to be the rear machine gun operator.  So the guy in charge of finding guys to be recruited to be the  rear gunner chose a completely random way of picking people. He had a list of names of guys under the correct height and he thought he would just pick those guys with no middle name.  So my dad's name Eli Lipman had no middle name.  When a some crucial moment arrived he was asked if his name was written correctly as Eli...

My first client was Peer beering, Ball beerings. I Worked for Sloan valve , toilet valves . RS Owens awards,  400 shot catalog including the academy award statues, Hu - Friedy dental tools ,2000 tool catalog and Slee glass awards, Blazer car lights.  And now today WTTW t shirts.   All very technically difficult things to shoot and after shooting toilets at  O'Hare airport you wonder why I shoot mostly architecture now.  After shooting the same toilet valve 14 different ways for 25  international markets I found I was better at shooting interiors. Mostly shot on 4x5 large format cameras  Michael Lipman Photography  www.mlipmanphoto.com
